BORDAR = A small-holder, usually on the outskirts of a village
CORTESHALA = Cottesloe
DEMESNE = Those parts of the land and rights of a manor that the lord retained for himself, as distinct from those used by his tenants
FERM = A rent in lieu of all other payments?
GLEDLAI = Gladley farm - formerly in Leighton Buzzard; now in Heath and Reach
HIDE = A unit of measurement, reckoned at 120 acres (485,623 square metres)
HUNDRET = Hundred, which was a district within a county whose village representatives and notables met roughly once a month.

LINCELADA = Linslade
M. = abbreviation for the latin word manerium i.e. manor
MANOR = Land belonging to a lord: feudal unit of land.
SERF = An inhabitant of a manor of lower status than a villein, in that even his body belonged to the lord
OXEN = 4 oxen is half a plough team
SCORE = A number equal to 20
SHERIFF = The chief official of a county.
STANBURGE = Stanbridge
THEGN (or THANE) = A member of the aristocratic class in Anglo-Saxon England, who held land from the king or from another nobleman in return for certain services
T.R.E. = Time of King Edward i.e. pre 1066
VILLEIN = A tenant of manorial land who held agricultural services. He was free in regard to everone except the feudal lord, which meant he was bound to his holding.
